Fellowship Program

TESTIMONIALS

'The Fellowship was an amazing experience for me, to be able to put all other responsibilities aside and spend two weeks doing nothing but focussing on writing. Having writers around me at all times, with the other two Fellows in nearby cabins, as well as writers on staff and in writing groups, meant that when not busy with my own writing, I was constantly exposed to new ideas and concepts related to writing. For two weeks, I lived and breathed writing in a way I never have before. I now have a manuscript of 41,000 words which, after further editing, I can work towards getting published. I am very grateful to the KSP Foundation for assisting me to reach this goal.' Fiona Robertson, 2017 fellowship recipient

The KSP Writers’ Centre is proud to host this annual fellowship program for adult authors, providing placements for dedicated aspiring, emerging and established writers looking to develop a writing project. All genres accepted. Applications for the 2024 Fellowship program are NOW CLOSED;

Successful applicants are gifted with the time and space to work in an inspirational environment with special access to Katharine’s Cottage, where celebrated novelist Katharine Susannah Prichard wrote most of her works. While in residence at KSP, fellows also have access to an active community of peers through our many writing groups, all of which are complimentary as part of the fellowship, as well as the opportunity to network, drink and dine with your co-fellows - in a socially distanced way, of course!

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) writers are encouraged to apply.

Please read the details listed below carefully to ensure your eligibility before applying, and download the Supporting Fellowship Document template before you commence your application. See bottom of this web page for links and FAQs. Check out the KSP retreat booking page for pictures and details of our cabins.

Important Notes to consider before applying:

  • Fees apply to some categories of this program. (Fees help to cover overhead and administrative costs, and sustain the program.) In the case of fee-applicable positions, a non-refundable deposit of $100 is required on signing the contract, with the balance of fees payable three weeks prior to the fellowship commencement date.

  • Successful fellows are required to cover his/her own transport and food costs whilst in residence, and submit acquittal reports to KSP within two weeks of completing the fellowship.

  • A fellowship period cannot be changed by the fellow once dates are agreed upon, and must be undertaken as a consecutive period. Please consult the Submittable application form for date periods.

  • PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THIS NEW CANCELLATION POLICY: If a fellow requests a cancellation of their fellowship after a contract has been signed, for whatever reason, the deposit will be forfeited and a cancellation fee will apply in accordance with contract terms. Postponements are no longer an option due to the unsustainable administrative load and KSP's highly busy schedule. If it is KSP that cancels, however, we WILL endeavour to reschedule the placement or offer a refund.

  • One last note: KSP staff will endeavour to facilitate a fellowship that includes the company of one-two other writers whilst you are staying at the Centre. However, this entirely depends on the Australian border situation and if interstate writers can travel to WA, as well as writers’ individual circumstances in which they unexpectedly cancel. We will keep you informed.

Application FAQs

Is there a cost to apply?

No, but you do need to be a current financial member of KSP to be eligible, or your application will be disqualified. KSP membership status will be verified by KSP staff. See here to join, if you are not already a member. Note that interstate and regional applicants qualify for the 'Country' category.

What kind of writers are eligible?

You must be at least 18 years or older and a current KSP member. Otherwise, eligibility depends on the fellowship category to which you are applying. Please consult the Submittable forms for more information.

What classifies as 'Regional' or 'Culturally and Linguistically Diverse'?

To classify as a 'Regional' writer, you must be based overseas or currently living in a remote area of Australia (see here for postcodes that qualify). CALD is a contemporary descriptor for ethnic communities. To identify as a CALD writer, you must come from a different country other than Australia, or you speak a Language Other Than English (LOTE), or you represent different cultural backgrounds, or you identify as an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australian.

What is KSP looking for when selecting fellows?

The Selection Panel will be looking for good writing, compelling projects with developmental potential, and writers who demonstrate commitment to and a clear vision for their projects, with a focus on representing a diversity of genders and genres across the annual program of fellows.

I have received a KSP residency in the past. Can I apply for a KSP fellowship?

If your residency reports from the previous stay were submitted on time, then yes.

I have received a KSP fellowship in the past. Can I apply for another KSP fellowship?

Previously successful fellows are eligible to re-apply in the second year that follows their last fellowship, for example, if you had a fellowship in 2019, you can apply again for the 2021 program. Please note this is only for fellows who fulfilled their contractual requirements of the previous fellowship by returning reports to KSP by the deadline. NOTE: This criteria does not apply for the First Edition Fellowship Program. Anyone who is eligible can apply, even those who had a fellowship in 2021, as long as reports were submitted on time.

Can I have a date period that is not listed on Submittable?
Unfortunately, no. Due to the scheduling difficulties this would cause, and to maximise the benefit of co-fellowship with other writers, we cannot organise anything outside of set dates.
