Hugo Throssell Writing Award for Youth

The KSP Foundation is proud to present this annual writing competition to honour Hugo Throssell VC. It is open to all students who live, or go to school, in the Shire of Mundaring. Hugo was the husband of writer Katharine Susannah Prichard. He served in the 10th Light Horse in World War I and was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery at Gallipoli. Hugo was the only Light Horseman to be awarded this medal.

 

The Shire of Mundaring includes the townships, villages and rural localities of Bailup, Beechina, Bellevue (part), Boya, Chidlow, Darlington, Glen Forrest, Gorrie, Greenmount, Helena Valley, Hovea, Mahogany Creek, Malmalling, Midvale (part), Mount Helena, Mundaring, Parkerville, Sawyers Valley, Stoneville, Swan View (part), The Lakes and Wooroloo.

Winners will be invited to an award ceremony at the KSP Writers' Centre in December, where they will have the opportunity to read an excerpt of their work aloud.

Theme

Every year, on the 11 November, we commemorate the men and women who served Australia and were casualties of war. This competition asks young writers to choose ONE of the photo prompts below, for inspiration, and write either an essay or creative short story on the theme of war and remembrance.

Entry Formatting Rules

​

Entry (excluding the title or sub-titles) should not exceed the word count limit
Entry should include a title on first page
Entry should be double-spaced
Entry should use Times New Roman font, size 12
Entry should be saved as a DOC or DOCX file document
Entry should be saved as the title of the story
To ensure anonymity NO WRITERS’ NAMES SHOULD APPEAR ON ENTRY DOCUMENT.

Conditions of Entry

​

  • This competition is open to West Australian residents in the Shire of Mundaring who are between the ages of 12-17 years

  • Entries are to be prepared as per the Entry Formatting Rules; entries that do not comply with the Rules will be disqualified

  • Entries are to be original, unpublished (anything that has appeared in the public arena, including self-publishing and social media, is considered published) either in print or online, not have received an award in another competition, and not under consideration elsewhere from the time of entry in these awards until the official announcement of winners

  • Limit of ONE entry per author

  • Late entries will not be considered

  • KSP staff, Competitions Secretary and KSP Board of Management are not eligible to enter

  • Award placements are issued only by discretion of the judge in the event of a worthy winning entry

  • The judges’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into

  • The KSP Foundation Inc. reserves the right to publish the winning entry or entries online or in a publication related to KSP should the opportunity occur, in consultation with the author

  • Copyright of work and ownership of material remains with the author, and the author accepts all liability for the contents.

Competition Judge and Sponsor: Valerie Everett

​

Valerie is a secondary school teacher and researcher/writer. Her first book The House that Was Built in a Day: Anzac Cottage (UWA Publishing, 2007) was awarded a Notable Book by the Children’s Book Council of Australia in 2008. Valerie was the convenor of KSP’s Anzac Centenary social history book, Blackboy Hill is Calling (Wild Weeds Press, 2015). Valerie has twice won the City of Vincent’s Local History Awards and has served on the KSP Foundation board of management since 2013.
